Against Racism

We stand against racism, racial injustices, prejudices and profiling of any kind and anywhere in the world

Like many of you out there, we are still deeply disturbed by what we watched, as a man’s life, George’s Floyd was squeezed out of him while the squeezers seemed unbothered at all by their actions.

For us, what happened in the US is just a part of a bigger global problem of racial injustices that have been systematically happening and pushed especially on people of brown colour and of African descent.

II will start by recognising that whereas these injustices are predominantly prevalent in the global west, it has also been evidenced that similar injustices happen in the east as well as on the African continent’s own backyard.

As Kaffee-Kooperative, we strongly condemn acts of racism and racial prejudice in any form because black and white as a human skin colour is a fable – you can agree with me that if you look at yourself and those around you, you will hardly see anybody with colour “black” or “white”. All you will see are different tones of skin colours of the human race except colour black and white. This is the whole reason our business was founded on the vision to create eye level, mutually beneficial business relationships regardless of the colour of the skins of those whom we engage with. As founders, Xaver and I did not consider our skin colours before we made a lifetime friendship and business commitments.

It is undeniable that brown people especially from the African continent have had a big share of side-lining and have been treated with utmost unfairness, prejudice and injustices over the last centuries and this should stop as soon as yesterday.   We strongly stand for the notion that nobody should be treated differently or unfairly on the simple basis of his or her skin colour.

I completely understand that these inhumane behaviours are not in-born, as we always evidently see kids innocently getting along with their peers of different colours without a problem, until adults get into the mix, sowing seeds of misinformation, hate and bias. The individual question we need to always ask ourselves is, what do I lose by treating a person not of my skin colour equitably?

We have all either gone through uncomfortable and traumatising experiences or witnessed strangers do racially discriminative actions and we walked by those episodes and life went on as if nothing happened. Well, its time to start the journey of individual action to root out the racial discrimination and injustices cancer.

Of course as Kaffee-Kooperative co-founder, born and bred in Uganda (this is a country in E. Africa by the way), I have had my fair share of face-offs with discrimination especially on my various international travel to Europe – to Germany to be specific.

“Once I was told to step aside out of a boarding queue at Tegel airport, asked to surrender my phone and open my photo gallery – for what I still don’t know. What clearly stood out anyway was the fact that I was the only brown person in the queue – the episode was soon over and I moved on”

“I have had “white” people shouting at me and my brown friend during a boat cruise on the Berlin canal – f***ing Ni***  go back to America.. – apparently to them we were some “African-Americans” who were in the wrong geography at the time“

I could keep going on and on but will save that for another day. Over time, I got to develop a thick skin just so I can bounce off such racial discrimination until it became normal. Nobody should have to go through all this psychological reorientation and torment just to ready themselves for a racially twisted world and systems out there.

I urge my German friends to go past the belief that every African is poor. I agree, we have our fair share of poverty as the African continent but that should not be our default definition. If you really want to help us on any challenge, leave your cameras at home – I am sure you have seen water borehole diggers who in return want Africans to be grateful. By the way, if you care to investigate, you will quickly find that the dynamics of the African continent’s misgivings and misfortunes have foreign hands plastered all over it whether current or historical.

It is my and our strong opinion and principle as Kaffee-Kooperative that whereas we stand with the world on recent events of police brutality in the US, a black profile picture on social media will not hack this global challenge. What we need and strongly advocate for, are individual actions and commitments to dismantle and put global racism, racial injustices and prejudices to the grave where they belong.

When Allan and I founded Kaffee-Kooperative in 2017 we founded it as a team to  change a deeply rooted, unfair system of international trade which leaves farmers in African coffee growing countries with the bread crumps and the European business with massive profits. Not much difference to the times when African countries were European colonies.

We did this on the basis of friendship and skills. Allan knows how to source and work with cooperatives in East Africa and to take care of our financial planning while it’s my job to market the coffee on the German market and to coordinate. We both have equal shares in the company and earn the same. Still when we are in business meetings regardless if in Germany or Rwanda, it’s very often the perception of our opposites that I’m the boss and Allan is my African employee. The only reason for this is our different skin colour.

I do not blame our opposites because honestly I may have reacted in the same way at some point. We need to be aware that racism is deeply rooted and anybody who says “me I’m not a racist” is very likely to be wrong. The challenge is to always be aware of the privileges you were born into and to reflect, to say sorry and learn for the next time.

So the current attention on #blacklifesmatter helped me to get out of day to day business and to  remind me to reflect on my behaviour.
